Saturday, December 7th we competed at the Chamblee Regional FLL Tournament. We had a blast, meeting other teams and competing. We were judged in the three areas of the competition: Core Values, Project and Robot Design. At the robot table we had a high score of 230 points. We earned the title of GRAND CHAMPIONS! Now we are on to the Super Regionals on January 11th!
The Atlanta Beltline has many other events besides walking. One of them is the Lantern Parade. We are using the Lantern Parade as an inspiration for presentation in FLL competition. The lantern Parade connects with are project because our project is that we have too many underutilized outdoor spaces at Oak Grove. Our solution is to beltline our school. These is based off of the beltline which connects with the Lantern Parade. Stay tuned for more about the Lantern Parade.
Meryl Vaughan The Grove Bots have met with two developers from the Beltline, Nancy Newell and Dwayne Vaughn. We told them that Oak Grove Elementary (OGE) has too many underutilized outdoor spaces. We took them on a tour of our school and its outdoor spaces. They gave us some suggestions. One of them was to make zones for the Beltline. They told us that to get people involved we should have a naming contest. We thought that this is a great idea. We are thinking about doing this. Once we are done with our section we will have a grand opening to also get people involved. This is a great idea and we would like to do it soon.
Josie The GroveBots have a different logo every year that relates to our topic. We have sketched out a lot of drawings and designs. Finally we found the perfect logo. We all decided that we will have a path going off of the back of the shirt, we also agreed that we will have a sun, cloud, and path with the initials of our school on each picture in the logo. The path in the logo stands for the Beltline that we are making around the school. Stay tuned for the Logo reveal!
https://fabrikbrands.com/the-psychology-of-logo-shapes/ The FLL topic this year is City Shaper which is about improving our city, town, or community. To start, the Grovebots came up with a list of buildings and public spaces in our city. The Atlanta Beltline was one of the spaces on our list, and I think it's one of the most important places in Atlanta. We decided to take a field trip to the Beltline, and after seeing all the art, color, beauty, and nature there, we came back and walked around our own school and it just seemed bland.
We also noticed that although we do have a lot of great outdoor spaces here at Oak Grove, Based on the results of a survey, we found out that most of our teachers want to take kids outside more, but they don't. So we came with a solution. Using the Beltline as inspiration, we decided to create a path connecting these spaces and add art and color, music, and activities to it. We told them that Oak Grove Elementary (OGE) has too many underutilized outdoor spaces. We took them on a tour of our school and its outdoor spaces. They said we had a great area, but it does need some improvement. Some of the suggestions they gave to where doable. One of the suggestions were, add paint to our crosswalk. They said if we wanted to add art onto our Beltline this would be a great way to do it. It would also make the crosswalk more noticeable. Another suggestion was to improve our security so that the students can freely walk on our beltline, and the teachers can make sure that they are staying safe. They gave us great suggestion and we're thinking about starting soon! https://beltline.org/2018/03/16/atlanta-beltline-hires-dwayne-c-vaughn-as-vice-president-of-housing-policy-and-development/ The GroveBots have met with two developers from the BeltLine, Nancy Newell, a civil engineer and Dwayne Vaughn, Vice President of Housing. Josie M. The GroveBots have recently visited the Atlanta Beltline. The Atlanta Beltline is a newest outdoor space and is comprised of 22 miles of unused railroad tracks circling the core of the city's in-town neighborhoods, the Atlanta BeltLine works to connect people throughout the city. Our trip to the Beltline was probably the most memorable trip we’ve taken. From the 98° weather to the ¾ of a mile walk. Our trip to the Beltline has inspired us to do our project. During our trip we realized we can transform our school so that it can have some of the similar features as the Beltline. Such as an opening path for people to relax and relieve stress. We were also thinking of splitting our “beltline” into sections. Examples: North wing, and South wing. We were also thinking about adding more art into out beltline so that it’s more colorful to take a walk around our campus. When we first got to the beltline we started on the east side, which is near the skate park. Our coach (Ms. Brown) set up a scavenger hunt that we had to follow. First, we went to the Rhino statue which represents that are 2 rhinos of this breed in the world that are at breeding age. Next, we had to identify the sentences that were in the graffiti art. Once we kept walking on the beltline we noticed all the different housing that the beltline offers and the open grass space. Our final trip was to Ponce city market, Ponce city market is a beltline establishment that is used for events such as Yoga classes, meet the authors events, board game night, movies on the roof, and other fun events for everyone. At Ponce city market we finally had a place to relax we had the choice of many different pastries and desserts. Going to the beltline was an experience we should never forget. Nya Smith |
